The Challenge
Digital platforms have unlocked economic opportunity at unprecedented scale, giving 350 million+ workers worldwide flexible, low-barrier access to income. In 2024, the platform economy had a market size of $556.7 billion. By 2032, that’s expected to more than triple to $1,847 billion
As technology continues to scale new forms of platform-enabled and project-based work, it is essential to ensure that this economic opportunity continues to grow responsibly, providing choice, fairness, and opportunity for all participants and addressing the needs of platform workers.
The Approach
Prosus engaged TomorrowWorks as a technical expert within a multi-stakeholder initiative including leading global food delivery and ride-hailing platforms. Working alongside Prosus, TomorrowWorks contributed research, analysis, and drafting expertise across the project.
The work included:
- reviewing key international evidence sources, including ILO documents such as the Brown Report and global survey findings on platform workers’ experiences, to establish a credible, globally applicable evidence base.
- structuring the framework around three pillars – Access & Opportunity, Earnings & Benefits, and Working Conditions – drawing on worker listening exercises across diverse regions.
- drafting nine shared principles calibrated to be ambitious enough to drive worker improvements, yet implementable across different regulatory environments and business models.
The Result
The Platform Economy Principles were launched at a side event in Davos 2026, uniting a coalition of global platforms behind a shared commitment to fair, transparent, and safe platform work.
The initiative served as a significant milestone ahead of the International Labour Conference 2026, where a landmark convention on platform work was adopted, establishing clearer international protections for platform workers while safeguarding the flexibility that makes platform work valuable. The International Organisation of Employers welcomed the convention as an important step forward for the sector.
